Making of The Distinguished Gentleman
I was on a shoot for a client and my friend Craig who was assisting me wanted a portrait after we were done. We decided to have some fun and do something edgy. We were out on a street corner and it was 2:00 pm in the afternoon. The sun was high and it was quite bright that day. Using a Profoto D1 500 Air I made the sun submit to me. I used a C-Stand with a Profoto Air D1 500 slammed in up close. I was so close to him that I had the camera lens just under the Profoto 3ft Octo. The light was just slightly offset to the left by a hair, probably a foot away from Craig so that his right side was highlighted more than his left. I set the strobe to 10 so that it was at full power and emitted a loud pop then after a pause beeped to let me know it recycled. The kind of pop that lets you know you just blinded your subject. The camera was set to 1/200th of a second at ISO 50 and Apature F20. In post production, I edited his skin and increased the shadows a hair. Below is the diagram followed by the image out of camera and the finalized shot.
BlogCraig The diagram above shows the position of the subject in relation to the lighting.

Here is the finalized image skin editing, and color grading along with adjustments added to the eyes. I also increased the shadows to give it a moodier and edgier look.
